Beaches

Ojochal is also a great place for people looking to relax on the beach. Top local seaside attractions include Playa Ventanas, a beach named for the sea caves at its northern and southern ends; Playa Tortuga, which can only be accessed at low tide; Playa Piñuela, which has a small reef off the coast; Playa Ballena, which is ideal for people learning how to surf; and Playa Uvita, which is famous for its pristine beauty.

Playa Dominical is a popular surf destination only 30 minutes drive north. The beautiful coastline of Costa Ballena includes the beaches of Dominical, Playa Dominicalito, Playa Hermosa, Playa Uvita, Playa Arco, Playa Ballena. These beaches offer various water sport opportunities like snorkeling, kayaking, diving, surfing and scuba diving. Other activities available in the area include sport fishing, canopy tours and tree-climbing adventures. 

A Waterfall Oasis

Just a few minutes from Ojochal is Cascada El Pavon, a small-but-beautiful waterfall with a pool at the bottom for swimming. Visitors can enjoy a dip in the shadow of a giant boulder, suspended in the break above the waterfall. The area is not crowded and doesn’t require a strenuous hike to reach. The hidden gem is a great stop for a laidback Costa Rican afternoon. Adventure Awaits!

Of course, Ojochal is perfectly located to serve as a base camp for daily trips in the area. Tourists may want to check out the national parks and reserves in the area to experience more of the local wildlife. Marino Ballena National Park, for example, is on the coast and is a prime location to spot dolphins and whales off shore or to swim among the coral reefs. Corcovado National Park, meanwhile, offers a wide array of native plants and animals known to be among the most diverse in the world. Expect to see monkeys, tapirs, jaguars and macaws during the plentiful hiking opportunities in the park.

No matter what type of adventure visitors to Costa Rica are looking for, they are sure to find it in Ojochal and the surround area.

Nature Paradise

Celebrated for its incredible biodiversity, Costa Ballena is a hot spot for nature lovers, conservationists and eco-adventurers alike. Various water sport opportunities like snorkeling, kayaking, diving, surfing and scuba diving. Other activities available in the area include sport fishing, canopy tours and tree-climbing adventures.

Spotting Whales

Known as the Whale Coast, for the large number of migratory whale spotted here, the most popular attraction in the area includes the unique whale and dolphin watching adventures. The lush forestation surrounding Costa Ballena is teeming with wildlife and the mangroves near Ojochal offer excellent bird watching opportunities for bird lovers. Relish in the tours to the pre-Columbian stone spheres or enjoy the ecology of the region on trips to the Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge with its miles of deserted beaches, variety of habitats and nature trails. Or you can horseback ride to the breathtaking Nauyaca Waterfalls, some 10km from Costa Ballena, and experience nature in its splendor.

Sportfishing

Sportfishing is another popular activity in Costa Rica. Depending on the time of year you go will greatly depend on what you will catch. There are many types of fish catch ranging from Dorado, Wahoo, Roosterfish and Tarpon. Of course for all of the large game fish there is a strict catch and release policy.

Surfing

Dominical is the gateway and the first beach of Costa Ballena. It has a relaxed atmosphere, and it is well known in the surfing world, a real surfer's paradise. If you are new to the sport, there are schools that give classes for enthusiasts. Dominical’s beaches have strong currents. Be cautious, and enjoy the ocean, preferably close to the lifeguard station. Surfing is good throughout the year with the months of June and July being the best for southern spots like Pavones and Matapalo. 

Ziplining

Osa Canopy is located on a private reserve of 800 hectares of primary and secondary forest, which consists of 9 cables approximately 450 meters long, 2 rappelling stations in the trees and a Tarzan rope. Also on the property you will see different birds, mammals, etc

Hacienda Barú: On this tour, 8 separate cable rides take you from one ridge top to another, across valleys and streams. There are 14 land based platforms and 1 tree platform with a view of the coast. The Flight of the Toucan zipline tour is as much an ecological experience as a canopy adventure. It is suitable for the whole family.
